Paris’s fashionable Marais district has long been a beacon for stylish travellers, making it the perfect base for one Canadian family’s home away from home. The owners turned to American-born, Paris-based designer Lichelle Silvestry to imbue their pied-à-terre with a sense of time-worn elegance. The apartment is located in a building dating back to 1660, and the designer says she drew inspiration from its “delightful environment”, including “the old oak entrance door, ironwork, terracotta tiles, ceiling beams, plaster, and the lovely greenery and brown hues of the courtyard”. THE MAGICIAN MATHIEU LEHANNEUR Mathieu Lehanneur turns 50 in August, but the designer is reluctant to throw a party, or take time off. “You know, I’d really prefer to be where I am right now, in the Factory. I have no other hobbies,” he demurs from his offce in Paris. To say ‘design is his life’ would sound like a galling understatement. The youngest of seven children, Lehanneur was quiet, observant and contemplative rather than preternaturally creative. Yet in 2003, Bridget Yorston was doing just that, alongside friend and business partner Becky Cooper.
