FOR NEARLY FOUR decades, beginning in the 1940s, Charles and Bernice Alexandra “Ray” Eames created what would become some of American Modernism’s most iconic objects. They worked in film, architecture, and graphic design, but were best known for furniture, especially the molded-fiberglass Shell chair and their signature plywood and leather Lounge Chair and Ottoman. Now admirers of mid-century design can get a glimpse into the couple’s world with the opening of the Eames Archives, part of the Eames Institute of Infinite Curiosity in Richmond, California. On display are the products they created and even the tools they used—some 40,000 objects. IN 1974 the World’s Fair had its smallest-ever host: Spokane, Washington. To prepare for the event, dubbed Expo ’74, the city transformed its crumbling downtown railyard, which sat along the banks of the Spokane River, into a 100-acre fairground. The site featured America’s first IMAX theater, a gondola strung over Spokane Falls, and a vintage 1909 Looff Carrousel, among other attractions. From May to November, some 5.6 million people attended the fair and viewed exhibits from 10 countries, including Australia, which displayed a model of the newly completed Sydney Opera House, and Japan, which built a formal garden on site. WHEN DOLLY PARTON walks into the kitchen of her youngest sister, Rachel Parton George, she’ll often sing out: “Hey good lookin’, what ya got cookin’?” The line from a 1951 Hank Williams song has become something of a Parton family joke—and it also inspired the title of the sisters’ latest collaboration, Good Lookin’ Cookin’, a recipe book released this fall.
