Commonly known for its use in wine bottles, flooring, and pinboards, cork emerges as the hero in this clever 20-square-metre extension by London-based Delve Architects. Challenging conventional building practices, they’ve reinterpreted this natural material as external cladding and insulation in this Camberwell Victorian terrace. We think the result makes an intriguing visual statement and applaud the use of a material that cuts carbon emissions, saves on bills, and promotes biodiversity. You don’t need to cut down cork oak trees to harvest this material; its bark is scrapped off, with the tree regenerating its coat. The extension’s pitched roof echoes the home’s existing butterfly design, creating a bright open-plan kitchen and dining space replacing the former dark, pokey back.
