Let’s be honest, not much happens when you turn 45. No one is handing over keys like they do when you’re 21 or telling you “life begins” when you’ve got 40 candles to blow out. As far as significant birthdays go, it’s more of a wallflower. In fact, you’d be forgiven for forgetting you had turned 45 – until you receive the letter inviting you to become a member of a very important club. In New Zealand, 45 is the age you can enter the free, nationwide breast-screening programme. Many people will unfortunately have had experiences with breast cancer long before their 45th birthday, but for me, this was the first time I had to personally confront the risk of the disease that sees up to nine Kiwi women diagnosed…
